This barrel will be on display at the wonderful Americana Vineyards in Interlaken and available for auction at www.paintedbarrels.com through early October.
Another painting inspired by Karin Jurick. Her latest painting challenge was to use a black and white photo reference and to add your own color. So, voila. Follow the entries for this latest challenge at her Different Strokes From Different Folks blog.
This is my contribution to the latest painting challenge offered by Karin Jurick. I couldn't paint this fast enough. There's something about New York City that had my bones leaving all of the paintings I have to be doing and dedicating a night and a morning to finishing this up. Thanks, Karin, for the community of painters you have brought together.
Kudos again to Karin Jurick. I painted this in response to her bi-weekly challenge over at Different Strokes From Different Folks.
This is a painting I've donated to an art auction/competition being held by our local public television station, WSKG.
The theme of the competition was Beyond the Boundaries. I painted this from 5 cell phone photos I took while visiting New York City a few weeks ago. This is the corner of Church and Vesey Streets in Manhattan. It used to be just an ordinary corner with a view of the most extraordinary building, the World Trade Center. Now, it is a street corner that changed the course of the world.
Here's a recent New York Times article on the progression of construction at the World Trade Center site. It has a link to an interesting video detailing the construction.
This painting was part of a 70-piece art exhibition at the following locations:
This is my contribution to Karin Jurick's portrait challenge going on over at Different Strokes from Different Folks. Karin has matched up 65 pairs of artists who are painting each other's portraits from photos. Not only do you not know who you are painting, but there's the fun possibility of swapping portraits at the end of the challenge.
So to my lovely anonymous model, I can only say thanks for the chance to paint you, thanks for rendering me, and this portrait is yours for a swap.
[12/31/08: So now I know that the subject of my painting is the children's book illustrator, Anni Matsick. You can check out her work at www.annimatsick.com. As all 130 portraits are posted through Jan. 7, 2009, you can check them out by clicking here.
Special thanks to artist Ileen Kaplan for turning me on to the painting of Karin Jurick.
Take a challenge from Karin Jurick's Different Strokes from Different Folks blog, mix it with a bit of Andy Warhol, and I've come up with my latest painting of boots. I always wondered why Warhol never actually painted those quadrants and now I know. It's quite time-consuming.
If you like great painting, check out Karin Jurick's web site, along with her Painting Today blog.
The New York Times invited readers this week to submit portraits of past New York governors as part of a story they ran on Gov. Mario Cuomo's reluctance to have his official state portrait done. I'm a big fan of Mario and felt, as a fellow St. John's Law alum, that I should give it a whirl. So here's my portrait of my favorite New York governor, as published in the Times City Room blog and in the Times the following day.
I'm taking the liberty of renaming this piece, New Neighbors, which is the new name of the Band formerly known as IY. You can check them out at newneighbors.info.
