. . . getting street maps

At auto accident EBT(s), having a street map of the accident location can be crucial during questioning about a party's progress toward the accident site.

One of the best ways to pinpoint a map of your accident site and its surroundings is to use the map generator at expedia.com. At their "Find a Map" link, you can search for maps by address or by intersection. Once you've found a map or maps that are helpful, print them.

. . . confirming whether an aging witness is still alive

Issue: Your case involves an aging party or witness (for you or your adversary) and you want to know if they are still alive to testify at a deposition or at trial.

Solution: Go to the Social Security Death Index maintained by ancestry.com and enter the person's name or social security number to see the results. Their records are not complete but they are a start.

. . . verifying a Notary Public's license

Problem: You suspect whether a Notary Public is indeed licensed to notarize the signature on an important document before you.

Solution: One of the easiest licenses to verify online is that of the Notary Public. Go to the database maintained by New York's Department of State, enter the person's last name, first name and then choose "NOTARY PUBLIC" from among the license types.

Additionally, the amendment of CPLR Sec. 3017 takes effect today, Friday, November 21, 2003. The new law, the text of which can be found here, eliminates damage demands in personal injury and wrongful death actions and allows counsel to refer to compensation dollar amounts in opening and closing. . . . finding online decisions by judges on your motion issue

Issue: Your case is assigned to a particular judge and you would like to see their motion decisions on a given issue.

Solution: Go to OCA's Future Court Appearance home page and choose "OnLine Decisions." Click on "Full Text Search of Decision Now Available" and search using the name of the judge and the issue, e.g., "kitzes AND 'serious injury.'" Click on the resulting pdf documents highlighted in blue for full text decisions.

. . . finding related Web results

Problem: Sometimes you've found a great source of information, like www.nystla.org, but would like to see more of the same.

Solution: From the search bar at Google.com, add "link:" prior to your search, e.g. "link:www.nystla.org" or from your Internet Explorer Web browser toolbar, choose "Tools," then "Show Related Links" to find sites that are similar to or related to your first site of interest.

. . . matching telephone numbers with people

Problem: in the course of discovery, you come upon a telephone number, e.g., in in a cell phone log and you want to know who it corresponds to.

Solution: Enter the number in the respective search field boxes of Google.com or AnyWho's online directory. If the number is listed or published on the Internet (at least via Google), you are likely to find a person or business to correspond with the number.
