Need to follow the news on a topic or locality? Try Google for topics and Topix for localities.

To search news by topic, go to news.google.com and enter a search string. Click the "News Alert" option and Google will even e-mail you news items on your topic as they arise. To follow the news in a particular locality, try www.topix.net. At Topix, you can also use a search string or simply enter a zip code to get the leading stories of the day from that geographical area.

Finding information about a particular motor vehicle using a VIN Number, www.google.com and www.carfax.com . . .

If you have a case containing an allegation of a defect against a particular motor vehicle, it may be worth your while to obtain the VIN number of the offending vehicle. Once obtained, go to google.com, enter the VIN number in the search line, and Google will give you a link to obtain the carfax.com report for that particular vehicle. You can also start your VIN search at carfax.com.

. . . finding related Web results

Problem: Sometimes you've found a great source of information, like www.nystla.org, but would like to see more of the same.

Solution: From the search bar at Google.com, add "link:" prior to your search, e.g. "link:www.nystla.org" or from your Internet Explorer Web browser toolbar, choose "Tools," then "Show Related Links" to find sites that are similar to or related to your first site of interest.

. . . matching telephone numbers with people

Problem: in the course of discovery, you come upon a telephone number, e.g., in in a cell phone log and you want to know who it corresponds to.

Solution: Enter the number in the respective search field boxes of Google.com or AnyWho's online directory. If the number is listed or published on the Internet (at least via Google), you are likely to find a person or business to correspond with the number.
