The New York State Office of Court Administration has updated its Attorney Search page.  New search result features include the law school the particular attorney graduated from as well as the year admitted to practice in New York.  Click here to access the site.

Electricians and other licensed trades . . . are they licensed or disciplined?

Check the active licenses of electrical contractors, riggers, tower crane operators and more by using the "Skilled Trades Licensees Search" option at BIS menu page of the NYC Department of Buildings. The NYC DOB also maintains a listing of licensed architects, engineers, electricians, plumbers and others who have been subject to license discipline.

You can search disciplinary and/or criminal information about a physician (NYS Health Dept.) or chiropractor (NYS Education Dept.) on the web. If a medical expert has been the subject of a departmental investigation, they often becomes the focus of an article 78 proceeding and should be followed up with traditional searches on Lexis or Westlaw. There are many sites on the Internet to find attorneys but only one that will tell you whether the particular attorney is licensed to practice law in New York State. At the Unified Court System Directory of Attorneys site, click "Attorney Search" to take you to the search page.

. . . verifying a Notary Public's license

Problem: You suspect whether a Notary Public is indeed licensed to notarize the signature on an important document before you.

Solution: One of the easiest licenses to verify online is that of the Notary Public. Go to the database maintained by New York's Department of State, enter the person's last name, first name and then choose "NOTARY PUBLIC" from among the license types.
